Learning guitar is more than stringing pieces together. After more than 10 years of teaching guitar and music theory applied to the guitar, I see that many guitarists stop moving forward, often because they run into the same weaknesses without knowing where they come from. My private guitar lessons in Brussels start from this: identify what holds you back, then work on it in a targeted way.

A clear starting point: the free first meeting

Before starting, we take stock together: your level, your goals, your musical wishes. From this diagnosis we choose the programme that suits you. Whether you want to learn guitar as an adult or get past a plateau after several years of practice, the programme is built for you, not for an average student.

The blocks I meet most often

Over the years, I have listed technical and stylistic difficulties that come back for many guitarists, and the solutions to solve them:

• the independence and flexibility of the fingers of the left hand, for quick and smooth movements;

• the strength needed to hold a barre while playing the notes, the chords and their changes;

• the right-hand gesture to get a regular tone, balanced between the attack and the body of the note;

• working on the backbeat, to play a piece on top of it;

• the synchronisation of both hands in complex chord changes, without losing tone or tempo;

• the relationship to rhythm: feel, timing, subdivision and tempo;

• the ability to interpret a piece, in terms of dynamics, breathing and expression.

The list is longer, but the idea stays the same: these flaws keep coming back as long as you don’t see them. My role is to help you spot them, then correct them.
